Pirates! Is an animated film about a group of pirates that team up with various historical figures on their many adventures.

Very few details revealed so far. The movie is based on Gideon Defoe’s series of novels, and it will be animated. And it’s probably trying to cash in on the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, but almost nothing else has been revealed.

The Scoop

Peter Lord is currently attached to direct, and he has previously worked on animated films such as Chicken Run, Flushed Away, and some Wallace and Gromit movies, although most of his work is in producing. No word on the screenwriter yet, although it’s possible Lord will also write, since he has some writing credits to his name.

Some of the historical or literary figures the pirates have encountered in the books include Charles Darwin, Captain Ahab, and Napoleon Bonaparte. Crap, they’re partly educational.

What’s Good About It?

Lord has been around for a while, and with all of his producing credits he must have a good amount of sway in Hollywood. Hopefully he can get the type of budget to make a good movie.

What’s Bad About It?

Too little is known at present. I worry that the film will be little more than a Pirates of the Caribbean ripoff, but it may end up closer to National Treasure, with adventure mixed in with history.

I don’t know. Maybe it’ll make some good money. I’m going to hold off on predictions until more is released on the film.
