Hellraiser is a remake of the freaking scary 1987 original, which was written and directed by Clive Barker. The original pushed the boundaries of horror, especially the special effects heavy gore.
With today’s viewing public far more desensitized to graphic depictions of pain, expect Hellraiser to once again push the boundaries of what is allowed on screen.
The remake will be written once again by Clive Barker, but no director has been hired as of yet. No doubt in the twenty-three years since the original Barker has learned a thing or two about making horror films, and with the original still so creepy and popular, expect the new version to be a huge success.
Hellraiser Script
Clive Barker’s original Hellraiser was about a puzzle box, that once solved would open a gateway to hell. At the beginning of the film, a man solves the puzzle, is torn to shreds and is taken to hell. When his brother comes looking for a him, a drop of blood allows the man to partly reform, at which point he enlists his brother’s wife, and his former love, to help him escape from hell. Presumably the sequel will tread similar ground while still giving something new to the series.

What’s Good About It?
Hellraiser is a classic, the remake has Clive Barker overseeing, and horror is a consistently successful genre.
What’s Bad About It?
There have been 8 of these films already. What more can be done with the concept? With today’s horror fans used to films like Saw and Hostel, will the gore have to go that much further to elicit a response? I already feel sick at the prospect.
Our Clever Prediction
Clive Barker’s a legend, Hellraiser is his masterpiece, and people like horror films. Based on the names alone, the budget should be decent enough to make a good horror flick. Don’t expect high art, but buckets of blood and uncomfortable amounts of pain should make you queasy as you leave the theater. Oh, and it’s set to be made in 3D, so when the hooks fly out of the box, expect to dodge, or you’ll be ripped from your seat straight to Hell.

I’m not sure gore is the direction the film has to take. The box opens doors to the pleasures of heaven and the suffering of hell. In subsequent literature, Clive has cenobites performing all kinds of services for puzzle solvers and the real emphasis is on blurring the lines between pleasure and pain. I think they went with a more bloody approach because it’s more socially acceptable to show mutilation than eroticism in serious movies. I’d rather see a film that explored more complex themes than simple violence. And as seen in the sequel, torment continues even after physical death. There’s so much they could do with this franchise.
HELLRAISER , It’s about time the 3-d thing who cares but please keep Doug Bradley ,Clive don’t do what they did to Freddy it sucked as they should have stuck with Robert instead of a jerk off .
Huge Barker fan. My Grandmother made me watch this movie at six years old. A horror fan ever since.
3D does sound a bit much. I feel that some of its atmosphere might be comprehended just so they have shots of ‘stuff’ flying into the screen.
With the mention of Clive barkers Book, I would like to see him work with the ‘Great and Secret Show’ and ‘Everville’ books.
couldn’t have said it better myself. HOPEFULLY, Clive stays as true to this storyline as he did the original. For those that don’t know, the screenplay was based on a Clive Barker novella entitled, “The Hellbound Heart”. A short but brutal story… C’mon Clive, 3D? Bandwagon anyone? Update maybe, but 3D?
Thanks for the background info, I didn’t know this.
I’m going to give you the Medal Of Honor for your thumbnail here, as Pinhead Bert is indeed epic.
