Grabbers (2012)

Grabbers is an Irish comedy/horror about a sea monster that’s invaded land and started attacking the locals.

The trailer for Grabbers is actually really funny, and it has a bit of a Shaun of the Dead feel to it in my opinion. Essentially, a small coastal town in Ireland is being attacked by monsters, and some researchers show up to disprove the phenomenon. They find out it’s true, and octopus-like creatures are eating people.

Fortunately, there’s a way to make yourself poisonous, and therefore unappetizing, to the creatures. Drink lots and lots of alcohol. I AM SO GOING TO SURVIVE THIS PARTICULAR INVASION.

I’m screwed with the werewolf invasion though. The pinot noir coursing through my veins just makes me more succulent to them. Nuts.

Grabbers

Jon Wright is the director for Grabbers, and I’ve never heard of him of his previous work, which means he must have just come into existence. Likewise, writer Kevin Lehane has clearly just burst forth from a rip in reality. True story.

What’s Good About It?

I love star Richard Coyle, who played Jeffrey on the British version of Coupling. He’s freaking hilarious and I will never not like a film he’s in…

Except for Prince of Persia. WTF?

What’s Bad About It?

Currently, it’s that Grabbers is only set to be released in Ireland. No doubt it’ll get here eventually, but not for a while yet.

Our Clever Prediction

I don’t see Grabbers making boatloads of cash, but it does look funny, and if it gets a bit of the magic that Shaun of the Dead had, it might do well enough overseas to give the filmmakers a bit of a boost into bigger films. Let’s cross our fingers. Looks funny.
