Silent Hill 2 (2011)

Flying Brian Banana Hammock July 23, 2010 16

Silent Hill 2 is a sequel to the 2006 film that’s based on the hit video game series. The game and original film were both in the horror genre, so expect more of that.

Few details have emerged so far on the sequel, which may or may not go into production later this year. The game series generally sees someone come to a town and travel between two worlds, the normal world and another beneath the surface, where really weird looking creatures who move in a funny manner scare the crap out of me so I can’t sleep at night.

Trailer

Oddly, films that have yet to go into production don’t have trailers. Weird.

The Scoop

No word on the director, but the film is produced Don Carmody, the same director as on the first film. He is also producing the next Resident Evil film, so we can pretend he’s an expert in video game film adaptations. Consider yourself scooped.

Who’s It For?

Probably R.

Movie Release Date

2011.

Who’s In It?

No casting news yet.

Interesting Fact

There would be a lot more noise about this film if it were called Loud Hill. Haha. I’m a genius. This comedic gold just comes to me. I bet you can’t believe me.

What’s Good About It?

The first film did a decent job of capturing the tone and look of the games, at least so far as I remember the little I played of them.

What’s Bad About It?

The story of the first, unfortunately, was also similar to what I remember of the game. Oh, the little girl is evil? I did not expect that.

She was evil, right? Whatever.

Our Clever Prediction

The first only made $55 million, on a $50 million budget, so I don’t see the need for another. I do like Radha Mitchell, but she might not even be back for the second. I know the fourth Resident Evil is only getting made because it’s in 3D, so maybe Silent Hill will get the 3D treatment as well. Still, it’ll suck.

Liked the games found them creepy to the point that I had to stop playing for various increments throughout. The first movie not bad, I thought that they got the feel and imagery of the game decently. The only thing that I didn’t care for in the movie was the ending it was a bit over the top with all of the barb-wire raping. Looking forward to a sequel and interested in what direction they will take it.

Though i see your point on the potential suckfest the second movie might become possibly due to the fact that it will make largely the mistakes of its predecessors past, or even because sequels often carry the stigmatism of its ancestors. i think the movie would have a chance if it tried to appeal to a broader audience. Sure, some video game-movie adaptations often get butchered for this very reason by becoming the stereotypical storyline most mainstream movies have in common (which usually disappoints new fans and alienates or angers the old ones), and its harder to appeal to all audiences with a horror based film (its not like transformers or a pixar film) but silent hill can learn from horror films of the past. The movie lacked a shock factor for me, which i think any successful horror movie should have. The music, local scenery, and the original plotline of the occult were nice add-ins to the first, but i think the second film would be wise to stay genericly away from complex plot explanations; i think many people dont want detailed explanations of a particular event amidst a movie thats supposed to make them strudel in their pants at any given moment (remember when rhada opens the door to alessas room and a little movie plays). Anyhow, if the plot can stay true to diehard fans and still stay simple but shockingly fun, perhaps with more monsters the second time around and more scares waiting around the corner in the dark world, i think this movie stands a chance. The second game plot would work nicely if it was loosely followed as sean bean (chris) goes searching for his wife and child; and in his torment, silent hill eats and craps his sanity out quicker than mexican chili at a chili con carn. Or maybe it can take a completely new approach, which might be productive or counterproductive. who knows.

um maybe you shouldn’t be commenting on this movie seeing as how you said “the little i played of them”. just a suggestion

      @jade,

I’m commenting on the FILM, not the games. I saw the film.

I have a suggestion, remember this is a MOVIE preview. If I was previewing the game, you might have a point, but even then, it’s a preview based on the info I have available to me. If a played the game and didn’t find it to be particularly captivating, then I’d say that’s something to note for the FILM adaptation.

      Sheesh.
