Priest tells the story of a warrior priest in a post apocalyptic world who goes out in search of his kidnapped niece. Kidnapped, of course, by VAMPIRES!

The titular Priest is a legendary fighter from the last war between humans and vampires. In his quest to save his niece he has two companions, one is the girl’s fiance, a trigger happy sheriff, and the other is an otherworldly priestess with supernatural powers. Together, they must save the girl.

The Scoop

Star Paul Bettany is re-teaming with his Legion director Scott Charles Stewart for Priest. Thankfully, they have a different writer this time, with newcomer Cory Goodman scripting duties. The biggest problem with Legion was the story, so perhaps having someone who can actually come up with a decent story will make it a quality film.

What’s Good About It?

Legion was a nice looking film with some decent action. The story was utter crap, which I blame primarily on the fact that making anything religiously oriented can be difficult for the hacks in Hollywood. Though Priest is also (obviously) dealing with some religious material, I don’t think it will really have much if anything to do with the Bible or the Christian Church. Likely it’s just a setup for the action, and if it doesn’t get to heavy-handed with the Christian commentary, it should be pretty good. I also love Karl Urban, and I saw the Comic Con trailer, and it was good, so lets all cross our fingers.

What’s Bad About It?

Legion had an absolute shit story. It was just stupid. I worry that director Scott Charles Stewart doesn’t know how to tell a story. I don’t just want action, I want some reason for the action. I normally love vampires, but it is starting to get pretty old. Hopefully they do something good here.

Our Clever Prediction

The fact that it’s being released in the summer also bodes well for the film, as it will have to compete with big summer blockbusters like Thor to make any money. If the studios are confident it’ll do well in May, then it must hold some real promise.
