Monte Carlo (2011)

Flying Brian Banana Hammock August 18, 2010 17

Monte Carlo tells the story of three young women on vacation in Paris who are invited to Monte Carlo because one of the girls is mistaken for a British Heiress.

The lead, played by Selena Gomez, is joined by her sister and best friend on a trip to Paris. Apparently, the trip is not all they had hoped for, so they decided to sneak into a 5 star hotel, where Ms. Gomez is mistaken for a British heiress. Which happens ALL the time. Anyways, before the girls can tell the truth, they are enveloped in the high life, with paparazzi, fancy cars, private planes, and a trip to Monte Carlo. Happens all the time.

Trailer

No!

See how excited that was? It makes you think the lack of a trailer is a good thing, when, in fact, it is not.

The Scoop

It looks like Monte Carlo was written as a starring vehicle for Selena Gomez, who Disney is pushing as the next Miley Cyrus. One thing she has over Cyrus? She’s 18. Mmmmm.

Anyways, the film is being directed by Thomas Bezucha whose last film was The Family Stone. Odd, though I never saw it, I figured it was enough of a hit to allow him to NOT have to direct a Selena Gomez film. No doubt Monte Carlo will turn into a love story, with a prince who decides that he doesn’t care that she’s not the heiress, because really, does it matter that your entire relationship is based on a lie when the liar is REALLY a nice person who just made a mistake?

Yes. Yes it does.

Who’s It For?

Probably PG.

Movie Release Date

July 11, 2011.

Who’s In It?

Selena Gomez … Grace
Leighton Meester … Meg
Cory Monteith … Owen
Katie Cassidy … Emma
Andie MacDowell
Brett Cullen … Robert

Interesting Fact

The film was originally intended to star Nicole Kidman, before it was reworked for a younger star.

What’s Good About It?

Honestly? The film isn’t intended for me. Younger girls may love this. I see how stupid and unoriginal it is, but that doesn’t mean the audience that the producer are aiming for won’t love it. I’m being nice here, primarily because Gomez is 18 and you never know, right? But still, the film may be some mild entertainment for 12 years olds the world over.

What’s Bad About It?

The story just sounds stupid.

Our Clever Prediction

I see a decent box office. I’m not exactly hip to what the kids are into these days (is it ‘hip’ anymore? How about ‘I’m not up with their freaky jive? Nevermind) but I do think that Selena Gomez has some drawing power so it should do fine. The film looks safe enough that parents won’t mind bringing their kid’s and dropping them off at the theater for a few hours.
