Conan (2011)

Details of a new Conan movie are emerging as filming is set to begin any day now. What is surprising, is who has committed to this new Conan movie and the movie’s lack of leading male talent for the role of Conan.

Conan (2011)

The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria. Mickey Rourke stars as Corin, (Rourke is out, Ron Perlman is in as Corin now) and Jason Momoa as Conan. It was just announced that Bob Sapp will play Ukafa in director Marcus Nispel’s Conan..

Apparently, Ukafa is the main character that battles Conan, and is quite the warrior.

The new Conan is played by Jason Momoa, a virtually unkown actor. He has been in a bunch of Baywatch episodes and is best known as Ronon Dex in the Stargate Atlantis series. An odd selection for Conan? Yeah, a little bit.

Why you care

Those of us approaching 40 remember the Conan movie as Arnold’s breakout role. I was excited at the idea of a Conan remake, at first, but now I am concerned. Jason Momoa does nothing for me as Conan, I don’t like the choice at all. Why isn’t ‘The Rock, or someone with a bigger name the lead Conan character? I don’t get it. This sucks.

Conan Pictures

Release Date

Release Date: August 19, 2011 – This has been confirmed as the final release date for Conan.

Starring

Jason Momoa, and Leo Howard. Update : Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan and Rachel Nichols are now in the movie, so is Bob Sapp. (MMA Fans know who Sapp is). Again, Rourke is out, Perlman is in.

Reminds me of

Conan the Barbarian (1982)

Interesting Fact

Jared Padalecki almost landed the role of Conan.

The Good

The relaunching of a great movie franchise.

The Bad

Ugh. Another remake with a less than stellar cast. I’m not looking forward to this new Conan movie. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong once the early images come out.

Our Clever Prediction

Undecided, but unless a bigger name joins the cast… I think the new Conan movie is going to blow, or be as clever as The Scorpion King – Rise of a warrior, which went straight to video.

For me, the first of these films (with Arnie in 1982), despite weaknesses in the narrative, scores 5 stars because the visuals / cinematography are well conceived and the operatic, classical score is the best I have ever heard. It is superb – at one time thrilling, and at other times intensely beautiful and moving, and highly memorable. The music (and Valerie Quinesson’s beautiful armpits) keep me coming back to this film over and over again as the years go by.

So with the prospect of the new movie coming out soon, I fear that the qualities that made the first (and to some extent the second) Conan films as good as they were, will be dumped, and we’ll have to suffer a modern sound track, fast editing, all action and no feeling. Apparently that’s all today’s mindless film goers want to see.

i think jason momoa is actually a good choice for the rule of conan. if done well, this movie might be worth watching after all!

Conan in the books was not like a bodybuilder. He was leaner and more explosive. Look at wrestler Alexander Karelin in his younger days, and you get the idea.

i agree….an0other choice could be Kevin Levrone…second to Ronnie Coleman. You could check his previous movies, Backlash and Red Line. You’ll see what I mean…

Why not use a current bodybuilder in this movie…one who has recently retired from the Olympia stage? King Kamali or Gunther could be stellar in this movie…they could match up to the original Conan. There are many bodybuilders who could act this role, why not find one?? Whatever decided, Conan was a muscular man, and I’m not sure I’ll be impressed with this movie if you do otherwise…
