13 (2011)

13 follows a young man who assumes another man’s identity, only to find himself caught in a horrifying world, in which a group of men all play a form of Russian roulette for others to gamble on.

First, the trailer actually looks pretty cool, so definitely watch it.

The young man in the story is named Sebastian, and he follows instructions left for another man. Sebastian is broke, and desperately needs cash. This seems to be his chance, but the chance is very slim. And if he doesn’t win, he dies.

The biggest chance I take is on scratch off tickets. My life is boring.

13 is a remake of the 2005 French film 13 Tzameti, which was written and directed by Gela Babluani, who is directing this version as well, although based on a screenplay by Gregory Pruss.

What’s Good About It?

Well, like I said above, the trailer looks pretty good, and while I generally think of Jason Statham as a stupid meat head, he has also been in a bunch of awesome Guy Ritchie films, and he’s actually not such a bad actor. Add in Mickey Rourke and Sam Winstone and there’s a pretty decent cast.

What’s Bad About It?

Of course, the great cast also includes 50 Cent, so this French filmmaker clearly doesn’t know much about actors who speak English.

Our Clever Prediction

I won’t predict a big box office, but I do think 13 is going to be good. I’m actually looking forward to 13 more than most films coming out for the rest of this year.
